In context of utility we are aware of hydo electricity i.e electricty
from water. Wtaer is at a height and drives turbine to generate
electricity.

In case you can provide a link than maybe some one can better explain.

No!!! It is not water. Hydro is Toronto Canadian slang for Electricity.
TRUST ME. Hydro = Electricity.

Everyone in Toronto says "Hydro" instead of "Electricity". I was very
confused at first, because no one used the term "Hydro" back in New York
where I lived before.

Depends on where you are. Typically in Canada (or, at least, BC), it
refers to electricity as BC focuses mainly on hydroelectric
power....HYDROelectric...hydro. Makes sense, doesn't it? :-)

As others have pointed out, Hydro = Electricity. The reason being that
at one time, the bulk of electricity in Canada, particularly in Ontario,
was provided by hydro-electric generatings stations, the largest of
which being the Sir Adam Beck generating station in Niagara Falls.

Because the bulk of Ontario's power is now generated from non-hydro
sources, with the changes in Ontario's power industry due to
privatization and other deregulation, Ontario Hydro which was the
largest power producer in Ontario was split apart, and the part that
generates the electricity is now called Ontario Power Generation (OPG
for short).

The term Hydro is slowly disappearing though.

I hadnt noticed any dropoff in the use of Hydro as a term where I live.

As others have said, "Hydro" is Electricity, but it is worth noting that
in some municipalitys Hydro is supplied by the local "Utilities"
company, so your Hydro bill may also include charges for water supply
and water heater rental.

On a side note my power went out this morning at 5am, on a night it
touched under -30C. Still -25C now and no power at home yet, so no
furnace and no hot water. Just as well we have a wood stove, it doest
pay to live out in the country and be too reliant on just electricity,
as it supplies all your water (from the well) as well as running the
blower fan and oil pump on the heating furnace. I have a generator as
back up, but at -30C this morning I wasnt about to lug it outside and
try and get it to start just to run the water pump for a shower.

Oh well, I'm told it will be back on soon, I am just glad I am not on
the poor Hydro crew out there freezing there asses of to get it working.
Hats off to them.

Iain
