Hotel in Melk & Salzburg
I searched through the archives for "melk hotel" and found very
few posts on hotels in Melk. Most people visit Melk on a day
trip from Vienna, it seems. I want to stay there for one night on
my way to Salzburg. Any recommendations? Rick Steves'
travel show recommends a place called Hotel Fuerst (at least, I
think that's what he said). Anyone familiar with that hotel? Also,
if someone has a recommendation for a Salzburg hotel, clean, not
terribly expensive, & convenient for rail travelers, post that too.

Re: Hotel in Melk & Salzburg
Do a check with Google and you should find something. I have stayed in
hotels in Austria and Germany many times and almost without exception they
have been spotlessly clean. The first thing an Austrian or German will do
when they go into a hotel is to ask to see their room and if they are not
satisfied with it they will leave without booking in.
If you are in Melk then try and visit Durnstein 25 miles down river, they
have a rather expensive hotel nearby but this little town is much favoured
by artists and is quite historic in that King Richard the Lionheart was held
for ransom there for 10 years when he was coming back from the crusades. I
much prefer Krems, it's nearer Vienna and has more hotels and restaurants.
Enjoy Austria, I always do...

I always enjoy staying at Salzburg, it is such an extraordinary town -
I would recommend to stay at least 3-4 days because there are so many
beautiful places to go....I visited Salzburg in December and I stayed
at a place called Hotel Centro, really a nice place to stay! Not to
expensive, very clean and also near to Salzburg Main Station. Moreover
you can easily discover the whole town by foot from there on, it only
takes about 10-15 Minutes to the city centre!
Have a nice time there!

Re: Hotel in Melk & Salzburg
I asked a similar question a couple of years ago. Several people advised
that every Austrian town will have several signs posted saying, "Zimmer
frei" Meaning room availabe for rent. They also pointed out that these
rooms are always clean and comfortable.
As it turns out we didn't avail ourselves of this advise. But indeed in
even very small towns we did see such signs. We didn't need to use them
because we ended up driving through to S. Bohemia instead of staying in the
small villages of Austria.

I stayed at the Gasthof Goldener Stern in Melk in September and was very
happy with it--right in the Altstadt, reasonable price, family-run, good
food. They're not on the web, but the address is Sterngasse 17, A-3390
Melk, phone is 02752/52214, fax 02752/52214-4
They also have history, which is also a plus for me--a former tavern
from the 14th century. Wasting a chunk of the day traveling to and from
Vienna strikes me as a major waste of time. I liked Melk much better
than Vienna, though, so I'm obviously biased 8-)

Just a month ago I found Hotel "Bayrischer Hof " in Salzburg to be real good
for money. Convenient a 100m from Hauptbahnhof, nice room with all
facilities (incl. warm floor in the bathroom, possibly not expected at that
price)

Mary, I assume you stayed in a single room? This may seem
like a strange question, but do you remember if your bed had a
board or rail at the foot of the bed?

I believe it did. And although I stayed there as a single, the bed was
double.
Great food, too 8-)
