Default HELP ME!! DS 230!

Hi all,

Well, so far the road has been tough. My Fiance filed the I129F for me, it
has been approved! So now I am just waiting for the package from the Embassy
(Edinburgh? London?).

Also this means that now I have turned my attention to the actual getting
married bit. Now, as far as I can tell, I need a Social Security Number
(SSN) before we can get a marriage license. On further investigation, I have
since discovered that I should have filed a DS 230 at the same time as my
I129F, to get a SSN.

So, What happens now? What do I do??? Can I just find a Social Security
Office when I arrive in the USA, and get one there and then?

Help me! Please!!!

Assuming you will be issued a K-1 visa. You need to go to an SSA office once
you arrive in the U.S. to apply for your SSN.
Take your birth certificate, passport and I-94 showing K-1 status. You need to
complete a Form SS-5.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if you can file for your SS# with your DS 230. If you
can I certainly missed out on it! I was only aware of the fact that form
DS 230 arrives in packet 3 from the consulate (along with DS 156, DS
156K, etc).

What my husband and I did once I got the visa is: we got married at the
courthouse without the SS#. I didn't realize you could apply for a SS#
before you got married (I had been under the impression that I wouldn't
be eligible for it until my K1 was "validated" through marriage). It
turns out though that other people on this board have applied for it
prior to marriage, so I presume that means you can. Anyway...we got
married and I applied for my SS# (first time around I was turned down
because I wasn't in the system yet). This was just at the SS office
around the corner from my house. You will have to search for the nearest
one to you I suppose by looking on their website.

did you have to sign a waiver when you married saying that you weren't
eligible for a SS#?

i've had differing answers from the SS Admin. everytime i call...some
say he's eligible before marriage with the K-1, some say he's not
eligible til after marriage, some say he is eligible before marriage
only if he has the EAD

i'd rather be able to get married before the end of the year w/out the
ss number for tax purposes...

our plan is to go to the ss office upon his arrival

Keene,

I truly doubt that you really need a SSN to get a marriage license. It
may be a standard piece of identifying information for a marriage
license in your jurisdiction, but not a firm requirement.

You most certainly did not need to file a DS-230 with the I-129f for any
reason. The DS-230 is a Department of State form that you need to file
to apply for your visa. Neither it nor the I-129f have anything to do
with getting a SSN.

Regards, JEff

Go to Reno, NV.
You hand them the money and tell them the information. You get the
certificate.
It's easy and simple.

Nope, I didn't have to sign a waiver or anything. We just walked into
the office, filled out a piece of paper (name, birthdate, blablabla),
paid the $26.00, then the lady asked to see both of our ID's (Patrick
showed his driver's license, I showed my passport), we were handed the
marriage license and that was it.

One thing that I have been confused about is the fact that on our
marriage certificate it shows my maiden name, and we were told in order
to officially change it I would have to go to the SS office and that
they weren't entitled to do it. I'm not sure that this is how it is done
everywhere because sometimes people look at me funny when I have shown
them the marriage certificate with my old name but have to explain that
it's now different. That part I'm still not sure about, but I haven't
had any MAJOR problems or anything. *shrugs*
