Christina,

First, your best bet is to do some research on http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/index.html. On this page, you will be able to take a "Skilled Workers" self-assesment test. This will help give you an idea of whether or not you have the skills required under this type of immigration. Also, you may be able to get a "temporary visa" that will allow you to stay in Canada for up to six months. After six months, you will be required to leave (if you don't you could face persecution or deportation). However, during this time, you may be able to apply for an extention, although I don't think so. www.cic.gc.ca/english is a very good place to start your research. It will help give you some basis on where to start. I am in the same predicament as yourself. I too met someone online 2 years ago, and we have been in a monogamous relationship ever since. It is now coming to the point where we would like to be married, but have faced many obstacles due to "how to immigrate". Marriage is a good way to go, but ONLY (an I emphasize ONLY) if you BOTH are sure that this is the way you want to go, because once it's done, turning back can cause major problems. Including your being forced to leave.

You can't just "go to canada and find a job". In order to do so, you must first be approved for a work permit. Working without one can cause very serious problems for both you and the employer. Most employers will not even look at your application without proof of ability to work in that province. Start your research on the site I provided, and also, speak to a lawyer IN canada. Most are pretty willing to give you a consultation by phone free of charge. Best of luck to you.
