I believe that a case is forwarded to Athens if they feel they cannot
approve it. It can stay there up to six months according the old info
on the consulate website. (It's not there any more.) There is one
person on this newsgroup who also had her fiancee's case transferred
to Athens. BTW, what type of person cpnducted your interview?

Alaikum Assalaam,

We need more info to help you. When did you marry?
When and where was the paperwork filed? From the States? At the
Consulate? What kind of visa are you applying for - the I-130 or a K3?
Do you have any "red flags" such as meeting online and only meeting face-to-
face once, or children from a previous marriage or did you overstay a
student or visitors visa here ever? Who conducted your interview? What
did he/she say during the interview?

If we're to help you with any
insight into your situation, you have to give us a few more details on
which to go.

While there are others a little more knowledgeable than I on the
possible reasons for the transfer of your case to Athens, I would
speculate that it is due to the fact they are short-staffed in Cairo.
On the surface, your case doesn't sound that different than the other
Egyptian husbands & wives currently on this NG who are having their
cases adjudicated in Cairo. Since you and your wife did DCF (Direct
Consular Filing), fingerprints are the normal course of events as well.
I'd do a search on "Cairo" on the NG and read a bit of our experiences.
While the wait seems eternal, in the grand scheme of things you are well
within the limits of what's "normal" in this viisa world. As I said, my
guess is your case was transferred for pragmatic reasons and not for any
suspicious reasons.

It can't hurt to call or email the Consulate again
and inquire about the reasons for the transfer. Ask them is it for a
specific reason or because of a backlog. In the meantime, read some of
the other Cairo-related threads here so you can realize a) you're not
alone and b) this is not so unusual.

Hang in there,
Patty Khadijah

Could you also possibly contact the consulate in Athens and ask them
about your case? Perhaps since it's now in their hands, they would be
the contact for your case. Maybe they can now give you a time frame
when it will be finished....

Good luck and best wishes!
Rene

Or at least confirm why it was transferred. Good thinking, Rene!

Rene et al,
for an FYI,
if a case has been sent to Athens, it's not there for Consular
processing. There is an "INS" office at the Embassy there, and they are
the overseas office of USCIS (as opposed to DoS). When doing my DCF
(which technically wasn't) in Athens, I was confused about whether or
not my petition would have to go to Rome for approval. I was curtly
informed that Athens had its own (then) INS office and those workers
would pass my petition on to the Consular folk when it was ready.

I
keep referring to INS because I know these overseas offices have their
own new name now, I just haven't seen *what* that is.

However, for the
OP, I think it was rachel212 who had some dealings with her case getting
transferred to Athens from another post (for "INS" review). It may be
worth looking up her posts to see who/how she contacted there.
