Regardless if your I-94 or your visa expires, you are still in a valid
status and you are still permitted to work.

I think you are wrong in one regard. Hari is in
status (i.e., legally allowed to continue working under H1B status)
until either (a) her renewal request is denied or (b) a specified "grace
period" expires.
Sorry, I can't remember how many days it is, but it is
in the region of months, not weeks. I was in this same situation back in
March and someone (may have been Ingo) pasted the exact regulations from
the INS Web site.

Looks like you have 240 days. If your
request for renewal is denied, however, your time is up (i.e., you don't
get 240 days if you are denied during the 240 days]
