Default Guided tour or self-help in NZ?

Sometimes, we have to take a tour or cruise to access the bueaty of NZ.
However, I will prefer self-help tour if possible to save some money.
Any experiences/recommendations/suggestions for guilded tour or self-
help tour in the following bueatiful sites?

1. Auckland region

2. Bay of islands

3. Coromandel

4. Rotorua

5. Whakapapa

6. Kaikoura

7. Te Anau

8. Milford Sound

9. Nelson and Tasman bay

10. Lord of ring sites

Thanks a lot.

David

NZ must be one of the most "user-friendly" destinations in the
English-speaking world. I'd go self-drive & rely on the i-sites in every
town (or DOC offices in National parks). For LOTR sites you need to buy the
guide book - but AFAIK none of the sites remain as it was a condition of the
use that the film-makers remove every trace (& a lot was done in the
studio). However most of the SI *looks like* lotr scenes - eg Mackenzie
Country/Central Otago tussock lands.
