That depends on whether or not the Canadians are bothering to record
data. While I'm sure they capture the plate on my vehicle, it's not my
car, and the only way they'd know is because I arrived in the US in
that car. Had I taken someone else's car while I was down there for a
one way trip, they wouldn't know, unless they took my ID. I get asked
to present ID only 50% of the time. Since it's obvious I'm not driving
my own car (because it's my spouse's), I can't say I'm impressed by
their lax attitude to not check things out and make sure I'm
admissible back into Canada.
I agree with your advice, expect they know everything. The worst that
can happen is not being allowed back if the absence from the US is too
long, then the OP would lose his GC. If he tried to cover that fact
up, things can get a lot worse very quickly.
