I was issued with a full green card 3 years ago but I have
been living
in Australia for the past 18 months, I'd like to
return to the US but
according to the INS web site I've been
out the country for over a year
so I cannot return on my
green card.

Does anyone know how and, if I can
get back in status ?

After being
out for over one year you need a reentry permit, but you're supposed to
get one before you depart. After being out two years, you need an SB1
visa packet from the consulate.
