Going To Niagara - Honeymoon - Currency Exchange
Hello Everyone,
I'm going to Niagara Falls this Sunday (8/16) for my honeymoon. I was
wondering if anyone knew where I can exchange my money for the best
exchange rate? I read that credit cards give them best rate, but my
Visa isn't really a credit card, it's a debit card to my checking
account.
Anyway, I want to get the best exchange possible and was hoping I
could collect some insight from people out there in cyber-land who may
have some ideas.
Thank you in advance for your help.
William

Use your ATM card to make withdrawals from a bank in Niagara Falls. US an
ATM at a bank rather than one at a convenience store or tourist site. You
will get the best exchange rate and lowest access fees.
They will take American money at all stores, restaurants and hotels, but
at a pitiful exchange rate.

use your debit card as far as exchange is concerned there is no difference.
The only difference is how the bank gets paid.

Re: Going To Niagara - Honeymoon - Currency Exchange
There is a money exchange kiosk at/near the Duty Free Shop at the
Queenston-Lewiston border crossing on I-190. There is another one in the
Skylon Tower (big grey tower near the falls-you can't miss it).
I would suggest that you just use an ATM, there are lots around.
Or just use your Visa and do direct debit from your account..........Canada
has direct debit in just about every place you will ever spend money!

Well, you're in luck, because it's actually debit cards that give the best
rate. Stick it in the ATM and enjoy.

It's their honeymoon - they're allowed to have a little fun.

Just got back from Niagara...it was awesome!!! I'm so glad that we
chose the Canadian side instead of the American side...WOW, what a
difference. We drove across the bridge at about Midnight (since LCBO
was closed...and we needed wine to bring back to the hotel room =) and
NY was desolate and actually a little scary...and the Canadian side
was all lit up with thousands walking the streets...even at 1am on a
Monday night!!
Anyway. In case someone else reads this post and wonders about the
exchange, we found the best rate at the casino. Current bank rate was
27% and the casino gave 30%. It's hard to not stay and gamble a bit,
but you can do it if you're determined. =Þ OH, BTW, the new casino is
magnificent!
My bank charges a non-bank ATM access fee, so the little difference in
exchange rates didn't make up for the additional ATM fees. I just
grabbed US cash at the bank before I left and exchanged it at the
casino. Word of advice, only exchange what you know you'll use on
your trip. To exchange from Canadian back to US, you take a HUGE
hit!! I would exchange $100 US, get $130 Canadian and when that was
gone, go back for more. If you're not near the casino, use your
Debit/Credit card. Some merchants will even give a higher rate on
purchases (not cash exchange). For example, one store in Niagara on
The Lake gave 40% exchange on purchases...so use Debit/Credit at these
stores and keep the Canadian coin in your wallet/purse. WARNING:
Check with your bank...sometimes they charge a fee to convert
purchases to/from USD.
The different culture took a little getting used to...litres vs.
gallons...celcius vs. ferenheit. We paid $15.00 CDN for 2 Starbucks
Mocha's (OUCH!!) and it was weird walking around with a pocket full of
coins, since there are no one dollar bills, you end up with a lot of
fives, 2 dollar coins and 1 dollar coins. We had some left and
instead of changing them over, gave one to each of the kids...cheap
fun souveniers!! =)
We took a few wine tasting tours...WOW...how great is Ice Wine?!?!?!
We fell in love with it...especially if you munch on chocolate
truffles from the Hershey's store while sipping the wine. Too bad
it's so darn expensive. $50 US gets you about 2 full glasses
(although you can't drink a full glass in one sitting).
All-in-all it was a great trip...thanks for your advice everyone!!
