Default Giving up landed immigrant status

Hello all. I have a question that hopefully somebody can help...

I sponsored my mother for immigration a couple of years ago and she
became a landed immigrant in Oct 2000. But the timing was actually
pretty terrible since she still has business to take care back in Hong
Kong so she had to leave in early 2001 and has only been back in
Canada for a week this year(she is back in Hong Kong now). When she
was passing through immigration in the airport, the officer told her
she need to stay in Canada from now (which she couldn't do) or must
give the landed immigrant paper back in October.

Naturally my question is if there is any possible way for her to avoid
forfeiting the landed immigrant status (as I have heard stories that
in the pass that under some circumstances it is possible). If not, is
it possible for her to apply for immigration again in the future.

Thank you in advance for your help.

No, there is no way around. If she won't remain in Canada for next 2 years
her status is lost. Of course she may re-apply later, although her
intentions will be in question.
