Default Gatwick Bed and Breakfast Accomodations

Does anyone have a review of the Victoria Lodge Guest House in Horley?
I'm thinking about staying there for one night in June prior to our
flight from Gatwick with 2 adults and 2 children. It doesn't seem to
have any rating associated with it (Stars, Diamonds, RAC or ETC) -
should that be a cause for concern?

Thanks!

Yes, no rating should be a concern. I've stayed in dozens and dozens
of hotels all over the UK and it was always the unrated places that
had problems. I haven't stayed at the hotel you describe but I
wouldn't stay in any place that wasn't rated. I've learned the hard
way.

And since Gatwick is so easy to get to from London, it doesn't really
make any sense to stay near the airport. If you stayed in London near
Victoria Station, you could easily catch the Gatwick Express (every 15
minutes for a 30 minute journey) straight to the airport.

And there are lots of good, rated B&Bs in Victoria area.

I did a quick google for it and it has 4 bed rooms - so almost certainly
just a small private house who take lodgers. Probably run by a couple who
enjoy having visitors (or why else would they do it) - So I would take a
chance and go for it.

No I disagree, if a hotel or guest house has no rating then it could also
mean they haven't applied to join one of the many schemes in the UK. eg AA.
RAC. Tourist Board, Ashley Courtney, Routiers etc etc etc. ALL of which
cost money to join. These along with many more schemes are very happy to
recommend a businees- as long as they've paid them.

I'm also looking for a B&B near Gatwick. I have stayed at some nice B&Bs in
the area, but I like to try new places. Here are two that I am considering.
They both appear to have a small village ambiance, but only minutes from
Gatwick. http://www.2hwy.com/eg/c/crchelar.htm and
http://somewherenear.com/idx.cgi?a=show&spt=32&east=531998&north=145696&uni que_id=2938&rlimit=10&sessionkey=3ffb7fbb267f&plac etype=3. I
read a description of the latter in a guide, which stated that the place was
15th century, "medieval 1-bay hall house, . . . little altered . . .
delightful." I'll probably book one of these places. One or both offer
transportaion to Gatwick. I have stayed at a number of guest lodges in
Horley, a couple of times at a nice B&B in East Grinsted and last at an
interesting place in Chiddingstone. Now, if you want a real experience, look
at the description of the latter in my article at
http://softadventure.net/kent2000.htm. It's a short drive to Gatwick.

There are many private homes converted into overnight accommodation around
Gatwick airport. they don't have to be 'registered' with the 'stars'
agencies to be alright.
If you are literally 'overnighting' and do not have the time for
investigating further afield or just want to be close as possible to the
airport, then there are several hotels nearby. I know the Travelodge is
close to the North terminal, although it's a bit of a walk. (The North and
South terminals are linked by a short rail line.) Have a look at
http://www.travelodge.co.uk/travelod...hp?site_no=726
There is a link to a listing of Gatwick hotels at the airport's website :

Small correction! The TRAVEL LODGE is on the south side of the airport and
you cannot walk to it ! I was thinking of the TRAVEL INN which is close to
the North Terminal. http://www.travelinn.co.uk/TI/index.jsp?page=inn&id=80
Sorry about that !

They cost money to join but also ensure a certain level of quality. By
choosing non rated hotels in the past I have been treated to beds with
broken slats, bathrooms with leaking ceilings (ever had the shower
from the room above leak on you?), not very clean rooms and more. I'll
not stay in un-rated hotel again. I've learned the hard way via
personal experience.

I am one of those willing to pay through the nose for the convenience
of the mediocrity of LGW Hilton which is convenient to S Terminal.

This spring though I have a first time dilemna there. We are coming in
S Terminal from the states but leaving the next morning from N
terminal to the continent. I have to think about my wife who will be
exhausted from the flight so we will stay again at the overpriced
monstrosity for the convenience of walking to it with our luggage on
the typical trolleys with broken wheels upon arrival.

I am concerned about the next morning and getting to North Terminal
from
LGW Hilton since my wife travels with voluminous luggage and the train
is unthinkable to N Terminal for us. I want to take a taxi from LGW
Hilton to N Terminal and probably will encounter the typical British
attitude problem for such a short ride until I start peeling off large
pound note bills and bribing at the outset.

Other than suggesting my wife pack lighter and take the train I would
appreciate any comments as to what I will probably encounter. Thanks

The 'train' from the south to the north terminal is closer to the arrivals
area than the hilton hotel is. and I am 99.9% sure you can take the luggage
trolley on it.

Then stay at the 'le meridian' hotel at the North Terminal.

Or just do the train in the morning. - why do you think it will be a problem
?
