Default Frankfurt vs Munich?

There's a chance that I may be able to stay over one night in either Frankfurt
or Munich next year on my way back from Greece. I love Germany and especially
German food, so I would love a chance to do this even if it only gives me less
than a full day to explore. I've never been to either city. If I have the
choice, is one regarded as better than the other in terms of things to see and
do? Also, I understand that it is very easy anc quick to go between the
Frankfurt airport and the main tourist area. How does Munich compare in this
regard?

Personally, I would opt for Munich. The Old Town is more charming and there
is the famous Hofbräuhaus ;-) (http://www.hofbraeuhaus.de/).
The transfer from the Munich airport takes some more time than in Frankfurt
but one hour should be enough. In both cities you can use the S-Bahn that
takes you directly to the city center.

Andrew

Let me voice a different opinion: Munich is for yuppies only, Frankfurt is
the real life. :) Frankfurt is not as "picturesque", but more metropolitan
(for its size - if you want real metropolitan go Hamburg or Berlin) and
offers lots of activities. Also there are a couple of intersting smaller
cities in its S-Bahn system, such as Mainz and Wiesbaden.

Both cities have direct S-Bahn links from the airport to their respective
city centres. The Munich one is a tad longer (approx 45 mins) and more
expensive.

Regards

If you never been to any of the cities I would definately choose Munich, as
there's more to see imho. Frankfurt is more of a typical
business-destination, compared to Munich.

Frank

You will have the most excitement and some classic experiences in
Munich--though it is a big city, and the transit back and forth will soak up
some time.

If you are more interested in ease and charm, though, (plus real convenience
for airport transfers and hotel) consider doing the STOPover in Frankfurt,
but not going INTO Frankfurt--and instead taking the train 15 minutes WEST
directly from the airport to Mainz. There are hotels right across from the
Mainz train station--which makes it super convenient as an overnight
option--and you can either just stay see the small old center of Mainz
(where there are great wine-tasting opportunities at restaurants with good
food) or take the train further northwest up the Rhine, to visit
character-rich tiny towns like Bacharach, or the touristy but quaint
Ruedesheim.

Can't but second that. Stayed at Mainz Ibis (close to the south station) a
year ago and found the town real nice and cozy. I guess I'm preferring
Mainz over Frankfurt next time in the area.

How was the hotel by the way ?

I'll be stopping in the area on my way to
Switzerland in June and have a provisional
booking there.
