Default Extending a working holiday visa?

I have a friend of a friend...who is here on a WHV visa for another 4
months. He has a job offer but is apparantly under a certain threshold
in terms of salary requirement to be able to be sponsored...
I know there have been some changes to the WHV over the past year or so,
but havent been able to find the details on here to clarify what
exactly.
Anyone know if there's anyway he can cary on working on contract but get
an extension to his WHV? or can he go to NZ apply for another WHV and
then come pretty much straight back.

The only way they can apply for a second WHV is if they "worked as a
seasonal worker in regional Australia for a minimum of three months
while on their first Working Holiday visa"

More details here: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/2

Thanks I was just on there wading through the info...
its not looking good, because his work is IT based he could get employer
sponsored but because of the type of work being IT, the requirement is
for a min $57K salary, and he's not likely to get to that level....

My understanding is that in order to obtain a second WHV people need to
have done seasonal work for a minimum of 3 months.
The following definition of seasonal work is from the DIMA website:
"definition of seasonal work for second Working Holiday visa eligibility
has been expanded from harvest work to also include plant and animal
cultivation, fishing and pearling, and tree farming and felling."

It is not possible to go to NZ to apply for a new WHV as WHV are granted
only ONCE to a person (except for the provision for a second WHV as
above for seasonal workers).

Details about WHV can be found here:
http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/index.htm

Could he just leave Australia and apply for an independent visa like
136? Especially if his job is on the MODL?

I think thats pretty much the only option left, the trouble is he has
obviously doesnt want to have to go back to the UK, has nothing there to
go back for, no property, job etc. There's then the financial costs of
flying there and back, the visa itself, the timeframe etc.
All when he has a good job offer here, but it just doesnt pay enough to
be eligble for the employer sponsorship.

WHV can apply onshore for a another visa, if their WHV runs out while in
the process onshore you are given a bridging visa with the same
conditions as the WHV ie you keep your working rights until you are
granted or refused another visa.

Depends what visa you apply for - eg there is no bridging visa granted
for a 136 visa.
