If it is really a renewal EAD itself, and not an interim EAD (because an
I-765 application has been pending more than 90 days), then it is issued for
one year from the date of issuance.

That would be -- all the advice about employment-based I-485-based EADs.
For family-based I-485-based EADs, you should file the I-765 just the right
amount of time before you need the new EAD. See for the I-765 processing

Yes, there is an advantage to applying closer to the expiration date, if you
know for sure that the renewal EAD will be issued before the expiration date
of the previous EAD.
