There are many possible answers to this question.
In the U.S. it is common for a woman to take the last name of her
husband. There is really no legal process to do that.
If you want to "legally" change your name there is a process through the
courts to do it.
We simply started with my wife's Social Security Card and went from
there to change everything else.

If you are still in India then go to Court and ask any lawyer to change
the name legally. You may need your marriage certificate and then
affidavit of name change to be made, may have to publish in local news
paper. If you want to change to name on your passport then take the name
change affidavit, marriage certificate, and passport then apply for new
copy of passport

Hi Capt. Tuttle:

I'm trying to get my wife's name changed on her social sec. card but
they say it needs to be changed on her I-94 before that. Any insights
into how I could do that? Ofcourse, going out of the country and coming
back would be an option but the issue is that we'll also have to get
her H1-B stamped (which is in her maiden name) this time.

Please help!!
Really confused.

------------------- I am not from Delhi I am from Bombay. go to court or
talk to any lawyer in the court. you dont have to make many trips,
lawyer can type the legal document and can get in one day. In bombay one
can do it in 1 hour time if you give "Chai Pani".
As I don't hv time to go to courts n all.....

--------- only one trip is needed
