Default driving holiday France, Germany, Italy - help?

Hi, we are thinking of doing a driving holiday this summer and having
never done this before, were wondering if it's feasible to do a bit of
France (we'd be coming into Calais) then perhaps the Rhine and Tuscany
in around two weeks? No idea about routes etc. since we just hatched
this plan but would love to hear any suggestions or ideas from anyone
who might have done a similar trip. Thanks for your help

It's certainly possible if you stick to Autoroutes, Autobahns & similar, but you
may feel a bit rushed as there's so much to see when you get off the main
roads - but your daily mileage may then fall from 400ml down to 35ml.

This, or something like it, is quite feasible. My wife & I find three
destinations to be about right for a two week trip.

Last year, starting from Paris, we visited the Black Forest, The Dordogne
valley, and the Loire. You can read about it here:

http://www.home.earthlink.net/~terryr999/Germany1.htm

For my preference, the Tuscany -> Calais leg might be a bit on the long side
and I would pick either Germany *or* Italy with stops in France on the way
out and/or back. If I definitely wanted to visit both, I would start with
Tuscany and work my way back - get the hard part over with first. That would
also give you the option of grabbing a hotel room for a night if you are
getting tired and not having to worry about missing your ferry.

A lot of this depends on how experienced you are with long drives, what sort
of car you have, how many people will be in it (are any of them children?)

Terry.

I'd certainly slow you down - suggest you make your way from Calais to
the Rhineland via the Belgian Ardennes/German Eifel hills, thence
along the Mosel/Moselle to the Rhine, and then maybe along the
Romantic Road from Würzburg to the Alps.......

Noooo forget about Tuscany, you'll be driving all the time !
Otherwise get out quickly of Calais, I'd advise Paris (but with a car good
luck!) then through Champagne to Alsace for a few days, then on to
Schwarzwald in Germany (2-3 days), up the Rhine and if really you had a few
days left why not drive to Holland, Belgium and back to Calais ??
For Tuscany you'd need another week methinks...

Is the Calais route fixed.
I'd suggest going to Cherbourg then visiting Normandy and the D day
beaches (this is the 60th anniversary) then, if you can tear
yourselves away, the Dordogne and cross to the Rhine.

Don't be silly. A bit of French, some Rhine and a heap of Tuscany does not
take 8960km (400*1.6*14) of driving.

Hi

about 25 years ago (when I was young & more stupid ?) I did several
European driving trips. We had no specific stops ..... just a general
idea. We worked on the basis of 500km on a driving day, then next day
sightseeing, etc.

On one trip we arrived in Calais, then :

followed Atlantic coast to Spain

zigzagged through the Pyrenees to the Med

followed French coast to Italy

crossed Switzerland, Germany, Belgium back to Calais.

8000 km in three weeks

These trips gave us a great insight into Europe. And now 25 years later
we've revisited the best places.

So, bonne chance

Peter
