Thank you for your answer. I think I'll keep it simple. Start with a
TN1 visa (few hours to obtain), then switch to a H1B to do the dual
intent for the Greencard...

Talking about cost of living... I saw on the web higher cost of living
in SD but the salary are lower... (exemple Seatle vs SD)...? It
sucks... More over, i'll work in Carlsbad and live in San Diego
(girlfriend post-doctoral studies at UCSD)...

Carlsbad to San Diego is not too bad, except during rush hour or on
Saturdays. I live in the same general area and make that trip several
times a week. It was very bad when I was working in San Diego. Also, you
may be able to take the train or bus; that depends on where you go. Most
of UCSD is out of reach of the train, but the 301 bus goes from Carlsbad
to UCSD (takes forever, though. Bring a book!)

You may be better off living in San Diego (North Park, the college area
and Chula Vista seem to have affordable rents) and commuting to
Carlsbad; about a one-hour commute, but usually against traffic.

Don't mention your girlfriend when applying for the TN. That could
suggest immigration intent.

Thank you again,

I will have to check for an appartment soon. I'm thinking about
bringing there 2 cars and live out of san diego area, or just 1 car and
live near University town center (UTC) in LaJolla (where my
girlfriend's lab is). Will 2 cars (insurance, gaz, etc) cost more than
an appartment in UTC area with one car? Moreover like you said SD to
Carlsbad is against traffic...

How much for a pretty cool appartment, semi-furnished ou furnished?
Why don't mention my girlfriend for TN visa? She's going there to
study...

TN-1 can be converted to a green card. The crux of the matter is the
labor certificate. That can take years to obtain and it is needed
whether you are here on a TN or HB.

I think if they not ask for its ok, but i have read that only H and L
visa allows dual intent. You can't be pending for labor certification
while on TN (unless they don't know). Here is a discussion about it
from another forum:

http://www.ulitka.com/usenet/index.p...4605#msg_54605

So what is the bottom line?

This is not true according to people here on the newsgroup and my law
professor.

BTW apartment has only one "p" and you might not be allowed to import
two vehicles to CA. In fact you might not be allowed to import even one
if it won't meet the CA compliance test.

You are probably better off selling your car in Canada, and buying one
down here, unless you plan on being here for less than a year. Importing
cars can be a major hassle; you may have to take it to the shop and have
it retrofitted to meet California standards. If you do bring a car from
Canada *temporarily*, you would probably continue to use your Canadian
registration and insurance (check with them if they will cover you in
California). If you register your car in California (whether you import
it or buy it here), then of course you have to use California insurance.

As for what is cheaper - that depends. If you can live with your
girlfriend, then that is obviously very cheap. Rents in La Jolla are
among the highest in San Diego; a friend of mine lived in that
neighborhood and rented a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom *affordable housing*
(for low-income people only) apartment for around $1200 or so. Without
the low-income subsidy, it would have been around $1800 or so. Around
Carlsbad, you can probably find some rentals for $1000 or so without the
subsidy, as long as you stay away from the beach areas, of course.

> How much for a pretty cool appartment, semi-furnished ou furnished?

Furnished? You are looking at much more. The only furnished ones I'm
aware of are corporate apartments that go easily for $4000 or more per
month, and vacation rentals that tend to be in the same neighborhood.

You could also look at a roommate situation if you don't want to move in
with your girlfriend.

The reason for not mentioning her is that with any non-immigrant status
that doesn't allow dual intent, the officer's ears will perk up, and he
will immediately suspect you of planning to immigrate - even if you have
the most honorable intentions of abiding by the terms of the TN.

If she is Canadian, too, there of course would not be a problem in the
first place - but why invite more questions than necessary?

Of course, when asked directly, you will answer honestly and mention her
- - just don't volunteer the information.
