And there might be a problem to re-enter Italy with a single entry
Schengen visa.

It depends on timetables. Timetables are not constant for longer
periods.

I suggest taking a train to Turin on the Modane route and changing there for
Rome. You will avoid the need for a Swiss visa and may well save money. In
1992, I saved over £100 on travel from London to Baveno by travelling via
Modane rather than on the more obvious Simplon route.

That is correct (although as others have pointed out there are also
trains that avoid Switzerland).

But there's an important development: today (19 May 2004) the Swiss
government signs the Schengen agreement in Brussels. However the
agreement isn't ratified yet and they still plan on having a
referendum on the issue later this year. Anything can still happen.

But if all goes according to plan, a Schengen visa will include
Switzerland!

You might not need a visa. Switzerland already accepts some forigen
visas. I know that a "UK resident visa" is accepted in switzerland.
They don't accept UK tourist visas though. Probably they have similar
arrangements with other countries. Switzerland will join Schengen, but
not until 2006 or later.

ps. They do throw people off the train if their documents aren't up to
scratch. My mum travelled this route two years ago and a russian man
in her carrage was noisily ejected during the night.
