Default Dec-Feb travel to Noosa Sheraton: request for advice re timing and hotel

My wife and I plan on taking a two-week trip to Australia, with perhaps
a week in Noosa, probably sometime during Dec. 2004-Feb. 2005. We'd
appreciate advice on:

1. Would anyone recommend the Noosa Sheraton? Are the rooms, grounds
and overall hotel nice?

2. How are the beaches around Noosa in terms of being crowded, clean,
etc? And are stingers (box jellyfish) a problem there?

3. As perhaps you can tell already, we haven't been to Australia before.
It looks like December-February is the rainiest time of year around
Noosa. Does that mean it's cloudy most of the time then? Is the
rain more like tropical thunderstorms that give way to sunny spells
or does it tend to be all-day drizzle?

4.Within that Dec-Feb period, do you recommend any times to be there or
to avoid? We would like to go during that period because that's when
it's winter where we live (in California), but are there any other
times of year you recommend?

Thanks for any answers and any other advice you care to offer.

Not stayed so cant comment.

The beaches are all pretty good, although a storm a few weeks ago did
some damage to the Noosa Main Beach. But within an easy walk or
drive you can be on some of the cleanest beaches in the world. Its an
easy drive along the beach to Fraser Island as well - tour bus or 4x4
hire vehicle.

Stingers are a problem if there is a North Easterley wind blowing, otherwise
they do not bother us along the Sunshine Coast.

Theres plenty of lakes and the Noosa River Everglades as well, if the
beaches are closed due to stingers.

If you decide to swim on our beaches - please swim on a beach which
has lifesavers, swim between the yellow and red flags and your time here
will be safe.

Brisbane is not far off - easy access by train and a bus if you fancy doing
something different - theatre, etc.

Normally that time of year is the wet season - however for the past
few years its not been a typical wet season. We are at the Southern
end of the tropical weather patterns and often get cool weather changes
pushing up from the South. Today is clear blue skies and not a cloud in
sight, a few showers are forecast for this evening.

Even if it does rain - its that warm this time of year you just get on
and do whatever you wanted to anyway. Even with full cloud cover
you can get a serious case of sunburn!!

All year round is good - our winter is popular with the folks down South
as its like their summers (no flames entertained) except warmer and drier.

Have been to the sheraton before, but we prefer to stay at:

(have no idea if there is any vacancy left, just ask).

It a good hotel - I've stayed there several times on business. However, it
is not on the beachfront. Personally, I'd choose one of the beachfront
place. They will also be more Australian - the Sheraton is ...well its a
Sheraton, i.e. it lacks local character.

All day drizzle would be unusual at that time of the year.

Avoid Christmas to the end of January. It will be very crowded with
families and schoolchildren and the prices will be higher that at other
times. November to mid-December and February/March would be the best times,
although it can be rather humid in February.

Noosa is like a rabbit warren or an ant's nest...It's highly
commercialised and crowded.
The people who have ruined this once pristine spot should be drawn and
quartered.

Sunnyday,

Depends on what you're looking for in a beach. We like most beaches,
both remote and 'developed'. Although Noosa is built up, it's still
nicely done. Condos on the hillside are tucked in and not really
tacky or gaudy.

When we were there in July, the beach was in use, but wasn't
over-crowded. Can't say for the summer, though! If the main beach
gets too chummy for you, just move north past the jetty and you'll
find plenty of room to yourself.

What I liked was the short walk to great take-aways and restaurants.
It's easy to get something to eat or drink and not have to carry a big
load with you. Noosa National Park is also a short walk away, and has
many wonderful trails and secluded beaches. Beautiful. Koalas too,
if you look up once in awhile.

Can't comment on the lodging you're looking at. We slummed it at the
Halse Lodge and had a fine time.

Have a great trip!

Jim
