Default dad has i-485 approved, but his spouse hasn't...why?

My dad applied for I-485 to adjust status, along with applying for my
mother.

recently my dad has received the approval letter saying his I-485 was
approved,
but my mom hasn't yet received the letter saying her I-485 has been
approved.

Anyone know why that is and should my mom be worried? What is the next
step to take?

This is entirely normal. USCIS routinely separates applications from
families. Nothing to worry about, unless the delay is very long.

Ingo - do you know why they do this? Surely it would be easier and
quicker to adjudicate dependants' petitions together with the principal
applicant?

So is there a possibility that, for instance, they might approve the
petition of one son but refuse his brother? (FYI we are a family of 5,
principal, wife + 3 kids and have recently applied for employment-
based AOS.)

thanks. However, I don't know if this factors in or not. the
processing date for my mom's I-485 was 2002. USCIS processing date
schedule said it has started on 2003 already. Is that too long?

The USCIS processing dates are just rough guesses, so I would not put
much weight in that information. I would allow another six months, and
then inquire about the case.

It would seem that way, but there can be all kinds of reasons. Starting
with simple disorganization to the fact that the FBI background checks
may not all come back at the same time to all kinds of other things.

Actually, my guess is that it often happens right in the mail room. Each
case is entered into the computer system separately. Months later, an
officer pulls the "next case" from the computer and comes across, say,
the father's case. He would then order the father's file from the
archive. The mother's case would come up later on the computer.

Yes, that's entirely possible. The only thing that is reliable is that
the primary applicant will always be approved first; dependents cannot
be approved before the primary applicant.

If the case is pending at a local office, I would agree with this advice.

If the case is pending at a Service Center, I would make an inquiry when
the case is 30 days past the latest processing time.

Example: if Service Center is processing cases fee'd in on January 1,
then I would make an inquiry if the case was filed before December 2 of
the previous year.
