Default Cuba money question

Will Canadian bank cards (i.e, debit cards, not credit cards) be of
any use in Cuba for making purchases or accessing cash?

That is probably a function of which bank and which card. I would
talk to someone at the issuing bank and ask them.

I researched this a while back. AS I RECALL, major credit cards issued by
Canadian banks can be used in Cuba. I don't recall exactly how they can be
used. But I know that I really wanted one. However, it seemed that credit
cards issued by major Canadian banks were not available to US citizens.
That was as of a year and a half ago.

Please let us know the results of your research.

Bob

I was there in May and outside of the big hotels and cigar factory
shops, there was a paucity of facilities for the use of credit cards.
Never saw an ATM. I'd think you're on a hiding to nothing with a debit
card. Far better off with a wad of cash, with a a credit card and maybe
some TCs as backup.

I'm pretty sure there are no ATMs there, and you're right,
you can forget debit cards. Many places (car rental etc) have
no problem with non-American credit cards, and if you pre-load
your credit card with cash, you can do cash withdrawels on it
at banks quite easily. In theory you could even use internet
banking to transfer money onto your c.card then go the bank
and draw it out. [Internet facilities are limited]

We where there in Dec 2003. We
took our Canadian credit cards
and found they would not accept them even
in The American Plaza
A shopping area for tourists only.
Some stores
even had those M/card and Visa slogans on the door. You would more than
likely have to go to a bank. We did not try that. Just take cash. Make
sure you have lots of $1 bills as well.

Just to let you know I was told that there is one ATM at the bank of Canada
in Havana but I couldn't find it when I was there in March 04. No debit
cards what so ever, cash talks here really loud!Make sure you don't have a
master card with an affiliate like CAA or others like that as there drawn on
MBNA which is a n American bank and wont work. Your CC has to be drawn on a
Canadian bank like BMO Scotia etc.your best bet is to take lots of U.S $1.00
bills for tips and a few hundred extra as there isn't much to buy there.Good
food can be hard to find there as well.

In the first floor at the Golden Tulip (at Parque Central) is an ATM.
Also the BCC in the Edificio Aeronáutico (the airline building down at
La Rampa) has an ATM.
Both work at least with european VISA.
