Default Croatia

I am going to travel to Croatia either this April or in the fall of
this year. For those of you that have been there, what is the best
gateway airport to use to get down to Dubrovnik or Zagreb? I figure
anyone of the bigger European airports would be suitable, perhaps even
flying from US to Budapest, Hungary and take the train to Zagreb and
then the Dalmatian coast.

ALSO! Has anyone had any experience with TravelTimeNY? They have a
number of packages to Croatia and environs at an excellent price.
Thanks!

I've always used Delta Frequent frequent flyer miles (second trip coming
up), so they make me go through Prague (through Czech Air).

April or autumn, you'll have to fly into Zagreb, although in summer you can
find flights to Split and Dubrovnik internationally. From Zagreb you can fly
to Split or Dubrovnik (on Croatian Air). Or you can take a train to Split
from Zagreb, but the train line stops at Split, and the rest is by bus (an
incredibly beautiful 4-hour bus ride), or ferry (limited schedules off
season)

Hope that helps.

I think there is a direct train from Budapest to Split in summer. Don't know
how much it costs, but it shouldn't be very expensive.
From Split you can reach Dobrovnik by bus.

In summer there is also a once-weekly train from Prague to Split. The trip
takes nearly 24 hours and return tickets are available from EUR 65 (seating
car, couchette or sleeping car is more expensive). But I don't know how to
book this train in advance from outside the Czech Republic. Whe I saw the
train sometimes last year passing by in Graz (Asutra) it seemed to be very
full, so advance booking seems important.

There is a similar train from Bratislava to Split, and if you book now you
might also get a cheap flight Bratislava - Split at www.skyeurope.com

you can also fly from Bratislava to zadar and dubrovnik
( italian names : zara. ragusa)
this part of Croatia has been italy till the end of the second world war.
Most of the people there were of venetian origin.-
with the usual etnical cleansing so common in this part of the world, most
of the venetian speaking people were thrown out in a few days.

Another option is Vienna, a very short flight to Zagreb.

Ah, come, come. Between WWI and WWII sure, before that those areas
were part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. And you're forgetting Italian
part of ethnic cleansing of Slavic people by the ever-friendly fascists.
Go get a history book. Not an Italian one, though - go for an independent
source.

I have heard that the line to Split is closed at present. I would like to
know if this is really true, because I was about to book a trip in May. If
it is closed I will go somewhere else than Croatia this year.

AFAIK it's closed indeed, but I don't know for how long.
They are upgrading the line to reduce travel time Zagreb - Split to about 5
hours or so.

See

The faster line is now international and not of much use for travel
Zagreb <-> Split.

Thanks Ulf, bit it's in Double Dutch. Or more probably, double Croatian.
They're much the same to an Englander!

Can you (or anyone) translate, please?
