Default Credit Card and car insurance

American Express has a program (it's optional) whereby you are automatically
charged $24.95 each time you rent a car for collision, personal property
damage.

It works all over old-Europe, don't know whether it works in the newly
admitted EU countries, but a call to AXP will help.

With programs like this it's always good to make sure that the policy
remains in effect --

That's no bargain. Collision is just another term for LDW (loss damage
waiver) which covers the rented car which you get free with a Gold or
Platinum MC or Visa and is the prime coverage when out of the US and Canada.
Personal property coverage can be bought (don't know why anyone would want
it if you don't leave your stuff in rented car) for 4.95 a day anywhere.
With the AX plan you still don't have liability insurance to cover the other
car or personal injury coverage. This is just a ploy by AX to sell
something of little value to the masses who are confused by confusing car
rental insurance issues.

I would have thought most Amex cards included CDW as a part of their basic
package?

But if not, then it's a good price for longer rentals. Probably
comparable to what rental car companies charge per day.

It may not work in some countries where you are required to take insurance from
the rental agency (e.g., Italy, as I recall). Of course the American Express
card also still covers CDW without fee, I believe.

I've been very happy with Amex's insurance plans - certainly the annual
premium for their travel medical insurance is CONSIDERABLY less than I'd
pay for similar "trip insurance" elsewhere. I have to pay the initial
bills myself, then submit them to the company for reimbursement (but I
think that's true of all such policies). I've had to use it a couple of
times (I figure it has more than repaid me for the premiums), and
they've always paid promptly - practically by return mail.
