Default Citizenship when Green Card is Expiring

My green card will expire in February of next year and I am applying for
citizenship as soon as my SSS letter arrives (4-8 weeks.) Considering the
length of time it takes to become citizen, should I renew my Green Card
instead? What happens if my GC expires while I am still in citizenship
limbo?

To be on the safe side, I would renew the GC. It takes about 8 months
for Citizenship, at least here in AZ that is the timeline, it may be
different in different States.

You continue to be a Permanent Resident. Only the card expires, not your
status as LPR.
You need to have evidence of being a PR, though, so you should renew your GC.

I think it is a good idea.

What happens if my GC expires while I am still in citizenship

You will not have valid evidence of your status, should you be detained by
the authorities, for example. You cannot travel outside the U.S. You may
not be able to show evidence of status allowing you to go on the payroll of
a new employer -- though probably you could manage that with a driver's
license and social security card.
