Default Citizenship application delay - question for experts

My wife and I applied for citizenship at the same time. The latest
status available from the CIC is that my background check is complete
(actually has been complete for awhile now) and I could be invited
for a test at any time. My wife's background check is still in
progress, however, and therefore my own application process cannot go
forward.

I need to leave the country to study abroad shortly and really need to
get my passport by the time I leave. I need to find a way to speed up
my application process.

I am thinking of requesting CIC to split our files so that the
processing of mine goes forward, while they do my wife's background
check for as long as they need to, as she is more flexible.

Is this something feasible at all? Any advice/tips/etc. would be
greatly appreciated.

Are there any other options available to me?

Thank you so much!

Yes, you can ask CIC to split your file from your spouse's - you shouldn't
have problems if you were the principal applicant in your original
immigration application.

It may be very difficult (more likely impossible) if your spouse was a
principal applicant though, as results of her security check may affect PR
status of you both. In some circumstances after it is determined that
security check result for principal applicant won't affect family members
request for file split may be considered.

Andrew,

Thanks for replying!

She WAS indeed the principal applicant... ouch! So I shouldn't even
try requesting a file split then??
Don't want to affect our citizenship applications in any negative way.

The weird thing is that we just received our PR cards less than a year
ago and they supposedly did the background checks back then... is the
citizenship background check much different?

Any other ideas for how to speed this process up?

Thanks!

There was no background or security check for PR cards.

You may still ask to split the file, but it may be difficult or impossible.
You won't know unless you try.
