This is quite simple.
- You acquired Australian citizenship automatically at birth.
- The fact you left Australia in 1978 doesn't matter.
- As you were British by birth automatically, your acquisition of a UK
passport did not cause loss of Australian citizenship under the pre
2002 law.
- I presume neither you nor your mother has naturalised in another
country prior to 4 April 2002
Just apply for an Australian passport -

If you have children born in the UK or outside Australia, you should
register them as Australian citizens by descent.

One final point. Despite the fact you have lived most of your life in
the UK, you are a British citizen by descent. This cannot be changed.
What that means is that any children born to you in Australia (or
elsewhere outside the UK) will not automatically be British citizens
(unless their mother is British otherwise than by descent).
You may be able to register such children as British citizens (by
descent) within the first 12 months of their life under s3(2) of the
British Nationality Act if certain requirements are met:

The UK law is complex, so I would spend some time getting familiar
with it, if you are planning to have any children born overseas and
want them to have British passports.
