Default Child Support Payments Once Living In The US

Does anyone know what the rules are for calculating what appropriate child support payments are once living in the US? Clearly paying the same equivalent amount is not practical given the average lower earnings in the US. I am happy to carry on with the same percentage calculation but not sure where the law stands on the issue. Anyone got any personal experience or insight in to this problem as I'm sure it must be a fairly common one?
