Canada, is it still worth it?
I'm from the Phils and we've been living
here in NZ for almost 3 years now.
Got a decent job as a programmer here,
kids are in nice schools, bought a car, in
other words we've already settled in.
But we were able to lodge our application
for Canadian PR also before we left. Things
are looking positive based on the correspondence
from the embassy. My question is, is Canada
still worth pursuing ? How is the job outlook
specially in my field ? Is the economy picking up?
I don't want to spend more money and start
all over again moving to Canada. Just to experience
more hardship rather than a better life than what
we have right now. I know there are gonna be
hardships and its not gonna be easy living in another
country from the beginning. But at the end of the day,
is it worth the gamble ?
Thanks

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
When it comes to job markets, there is never any certainty. If you
are happy, I would not bother moving. NZ is a nice place. Be happy
about it!!
One thing you could keep in mind is that if your kids are soon to be
of college going age, they may be interested in coming to Canada for
studies. I would keep the application going in case you ever want
to go there.

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
If you have a good job then what's your problem in living in NZ? Yes
hardships are on way whenever you decide to move.

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
You've got everything already in NZ. What more do you need? Why do you think
Canada is better than NZ? The difference in your quality of life will be
unnoticable between NZ and Canada. Both countries may be a lot better than
where you are originally from.

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
thanks for the reply. its just the creeping feeling that
the grass is always greener on the other side of the
fence. plus, the money and time invested in that effort
will also go to waste if we do not pursue it. NZ with
its only 4M population does not create that big an economy
compared to Canada. so i'm under the impression that
the quality of life there might be slightly better though the
cost of living can be higher as well.
cheers

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
yeah, its a nice country indeed !
but moneywise i can imagine i would probaby get more
if i'll have the same job in canada. that is if i get one.
it gives me a creep when i'm hearing some programmers
ending up in factories or worse unemployed for more
than a couple of months.
cheers mate !

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
If you are thinking about Canada, you should make sure you can at
least get indefinite returning resident visas from New Zealand.
http://www.immigration.govt.nz
An even better option might be to stay in NZ long enough to get
citizenship, although you may lose your Philippines citizenship (check
with the government).
http://www.citizenship.govt.nz
One of the requirements for NZ citizenship is that you need to intend
to stay in NZ, though.

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
If you are doing fine in NZ, I wouldn't recommend that you move to
Canada.
Canada has high taxes and very limited opportunites.
Immigrant groups are suing the federal government because they were
misled before they came to Canada about the opportunites. Most end up
doing minimum wage jobs.
I don't know if you like long winters. By the way temperature right
now is -5C.

Re: Canada, is it still worth it?
Hi Deck,
We are at the same situation. We have been living here in NZ for 4 years
and recently have got Canadian visa. My husband is keen to go because of
job and higher industry but I have a very god job and our children are
very happy here. We have just bought a house and looks as we have
everything I dreamed about. On the other hand it took 4 years to get a
visa and a lot of money. I would rather stay here but afraid if my
husband blames me for not going and loosing the chance of living in
Canada. Our family is falling apart and I don't what to do.
