Default Burning Stuff (Quarantine Costs)

Hi all,

I've been in contact with AQIS (The Australian Quarantine and
Inspection Service) and now have a pretty good idea about what we can
and cannot bring into the country. It appears that having wooden items
fumigated here won't make any difference as to whether they'd be
accepted in Aus or not.

What AQIS can't tell me are the costs of fumigation and/or destruction
of property. Can anybody share their own stories, and let me know who
you've dealt with that does this sort of thing so I can get a good
idea?

On one hand, we don't want to trash something here that we can use in
Aus, but then we don't want to ship it only to have to destroy it at
the other end.

Thanks

Matt

Theres a little bin to put items in you accidently brought with you just
before entering customs. Put everything you cant bring into that bin :)

We had a small pillow stuffed with lavender that the packers included
- they were told not to, but keeping an eye on them proved harder than
we expected.

We were given the choice of destroy for ~$70 or fumigate for ~$160 we
elected destroy.

All our wood came through OK - furniture, carvings, chopping boards.

They seem to open your container and pick out about 20% of items for a
physical check. We had an urgent phone call for the lock code for a
briefcase (remembered) and the location of a key for a trunk
(somewhere in the rest of the packing so lock destroyed).

Getting through the customs & quarantine queues will take as long as
the ship does to come from Europe.
