Default Border Procedures by land

I was born in Canada but grew outside North America.
I applied for my Canadian passport and am planning on driving to Canada to visit family.

What can i expect at the border ?
will i need a Canadian passport or will my birth certificate and photo id due or do they need my canadian passport to stamp my entry?

Thanks!
