Default birth certificate needed for my baby to travel to US (from Canada)?

hi there,
I Live in Ottawa, ONtario. We are planning on a trip to the US
sometime in Jan or February. I realize that I Have to get a birth
certificate for my baby. I filed the registration of birth late November
and when I called the office, they say I Have to wait for 6-8 weeks
before the application is approved. After that, I can apply for birth
certificate. I do not know how long it will take for the process. Is
there a way to speed thing up? Is it necessary to have a birth
certificate if travel to US (by air).

thanks

Anthony

It is also recommended (and the US government is starting to require it)
that children have their own passports.

I think it will be difficult to complete everything needed to travel by even
February. There is also the matter fo a passport that will be necessary
because of fears of illegal smuggling of a child. They are serious about
documentation at both sides of the border.
