Default Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Hi,

Thinking of travelling overland from Bangkok to Chaing Mai. What is the best
mode. Any comfortable coach and how much and time it take to reach there ?

Thought this would be a good way to see Thailand and wonder what interesting
things to do in Chaing Mai and Bangkok for a family who is planning to visit
this Dec.

From Chiang Mai to Bangkok, what kind of Air Service is available for a one
way trip, to connect our return flight to Singapore.

Thanks and appreciate any comments.

I used the diesel railcar, it was very COLD so bring a warm sweater. The
daytrain was ok, but you might get a little bored.

There is some nice views from the car though as you pass over the plains
with rice fields, up through the mountains with steep sides down
outside. Scary!

I enjoyed the train trip.

There are buses and trains.

Plenty of flights. Generally, Thai air services are excellent.

There are both day and night busses and trains. The VIP night busses
tend to be very cold but they do provide blankets. The night train beds
offer a comfortable sleep unless you are very tall. Personally, I prefer
the overnight passage as the scenery from Bangkok until about 60 km from
Chiang Mai is almost identical; rice fields and banana plantations in
endless succession. But once you reach the mountains the views are
pretty and interesting to photograph as you pass through.

If you were to stop in Ayutthya for a day, stop in Sukkothai for a day,
then continue north I'd agree. But to make a non-stop trip, better to
take a night train or buss, or a quick 30 minute flight.

There are so many varied and interesting things in both cities, but I'd
give Bangkok three full days of sightseeing and Chiang Mai at least 4
full days. There is a much greater variety of sight to see and things to
do in the north.

Chiang Mai's airport is International. You can check your baggage, clear
immigration, and board in Chiang Mai, perhaps needing to change planes
in Bangkok, and collect your bags in S'pore with no problems. There are
several flights a day during December.

If you have more specific question, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

We travelled from Bangkok to Chang Mai with the night train. Lovely. Around
22.00 you gonna sleep and in the morning around 9.00 you arrive. The day can
start. A nice and good way to travel.

We did it with the nightbus and wished we had done it with the train
instead. Also flew once which was perfectly ok.

Can you buy tickets for the train the same day as for Samui?

I purchased a round trip day time train ticket from Bangkok to Chaing
Mai.

The train is old, and broke down 3 times on the way. About 1/3 of the
trip the A/C was out then working again, then off again, etc. The
sights along the way were OK but more or less the same = nothing
exciting.

A few days later, I made reservations to come back by air for around
$100. I was able to return my train ticket in Chaing Mai and get my
money back.

I went around April, and the weather in Chaing Mai was beautiful, with
somewhat chilly nights, and perfect days = so bring a sweater.

I say spend 8 nights in Bangkok, (4 days before Chaing Mai, and 4 days
after).

By the way = it's really not necessary to buy a RT ticket from the
states. Tickets are cheap, and plentyful in Bangkok, but give yourself
4 days before you leave to buy one.

I went around the world for $1300, buying a 2nd ticket in Bangkok. As
long as you stick to countries near the equator as you go around, it's
cheap.

I made a second trip around via New Orleans/Paris / Bangkok for around
$700. I got a ticket from Bangkok to New Orleans on United Air through
a TA in Bangkok for around $336.

The rapid express night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes just a
bit longer given the number of stops made, leaving at 22:00 and
arriving in Chiang Mai at 12:30 the next day. I had the lower berth,
which lets you open the window to both get some cool night air and
glance out the window if you don't mind raising up to do so (it was
quite hot when I took the un-air conditioned night train about three
weeks ago, and the person in the upper berth complained about how hot
it was having no window to open and relying only on the oscillating
fan for ventilation.) The only negatives was that by sleeping with the
window open you end up with a variety of leaves and small insects on
your bedding, and I was often awakened by the numerous station stops
and the jarring of the train as it leaves the station. It was nice
watching the sunrise reflected in the paddy fields, and the section of
jungle about an hour outside of Chiang Mai was quite scenic. If a
person were to spend 4 days in Chiang Mai, I'd suggest a 2-day/1-night
trek in the Doi Inthanond National Park (arranged through Top North
Tours), which includes elephant riding, bamboo rafting and a night in
a Karen hill tribe village; you will do about six hours of hiking over
the two days (approx. 18 kilometers), which is a workout but was
manageable for someone in so-so physical condition (like myself).

There is NO such thing as a Comfortable coach ride in Thailand.
Most are infested with cockroaches.

Either fly or take the overnight train and get pissed on the cheap
beer

Hello

there is the train witch is very good but quite long all night because
it travel at night only and you won't see nothing..ypour best bet is to
Booked yourself a return flight on Thai Airways

they have excellent service and since it is a interior flight you
actually can booked it on their website www.thaiairways.com

anyway their price's on the web is cheaper...i paid a return
flight from Chianf MAI TO Bnagkok in business class only 209.00 us
this was last may

I think this would be your best option ssince there is quite a lot to
see in Chiand mai and surrounding,,Beautiful country
