Default Bangkok - day trip to beach

I'm staying in the shangri la in july and wanted to visit a beach for a day
trip

Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this? and the best/closest beach
really I need to know

Where to go
How to get there
Where I can get a timetable if a bus/train
how to check the weather before I go
is there anywhere cheap to eat/stay when i'm there

Thanks
Mark

The closest "proper" beach would be Baang Saen on the way to Pattaya,
however this is mainly a Thai scene, although farangs can occasionally be
seen there. It would be far better for you to head straight to Pattaya
where you have the choice of the beach at Pattaya itself (all the way along
Beach Road) or just over the headland is Jomthien Beach, which is very
popular with farangs. Both beaches are lined with tables, deck chairs and
Umbrellas, you can sit there all day for 30 or 40 baht per person. Vendors
are there selling all kinds of things. You can order food and drinks from
the owner of the chairs that you sit at, they bring you the food and you pay
your bill when you leave.

How to get there:- The quickest way would be to hire a meter taxi to take to
there from your hotel, negotiate the fare before you get in (around 1000
baht one way) trip time around 2&1/2 hours from your hotel.Taxis going back
to Bangkok are easy to find as well. "Taxi to Bangkok" signs are everywhere!

The cheapest way is to take a taxi from The Shangri La to Taaksin Skytrain
station just down the river a bit from your hotel, take the train to Siam
Station and there, change to the train going to On Nut on the Sukhumvit
line. Get off at Ekamai station in Sukhumvit road, the bus station for
buses to Pattaya is close to the station. Buses to Pattaya run every 30
minutes or so, fare around 100baht, time around 2 hours, No need to book in
advance, just buy a ticket which will have the number of the bus you will be
going on printed on it. From the bus station at Pattaya take a navy blue
"Baht bus" to Jomthien. The drivers will probably try to gouge you for 150
baht or so if you go in the taxi on your own, so try to find one that is
going to Jomthien with other passengers, this will be cheaper.

Day trip?? To go in the morning and return in the evening would make it a
long day with limited time on the beach, especially doing it by bus.
Pattaya is well worth at least a one night stopover, preferably two. There
are plenty of good, cheap hotels at that time of year (the off season)
prices are anywhere between 400 to1000 baht per night for the more popular
mid range ones. It is the rainy season in July, but don't let that put you
off. Hotels and restaurants are everywhere in Pattaya/Jomthien and all kinds
of food and accommodation is available ranging from cheap to expensive.

Weather will be hot and humid probably around 25oC at nights and 37or38oC
during the day A typical rainy season means rain, usually in the late
afternoon /evening but the last few years have been unpredictable.

That pretty well sums it up...except the bus I caught from Ekkamai took
nearly 4 hours to get to Pattaya.....but the return trip only took 2
hours 40 minutes......to Mo Chit though, might have been quicker to go to
Ekkamai.
I got off before the North Pattaya bus station and caught a
"taxi" for 100 baht to Jomtien
