Default Back to Basic's with ACS!!

Hi All

Need some solid advice on the basics of ACS RPL Assesment.

I am currently in the process of being assesed by the ACS & have hit a
stumbling block with the number of years experience that I have, In
light of the changes made recently & broadcast by George Lombard (Just
thought I'd counter the Steven O'Neil fan club on your behalf (GRIN) The
question is how many years of professional work experience do I have to
have for RPL ?

According to my calculations I have just over 7 years professional
experience as of June 2003. This is in the form of continuous employment
in IT with various different companies.

The ACS PIM Guidlines states the following:-

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

2.2.1 An applicant who has limited or no qualifications but who
has extensive and varied experience of at least six years plus
supporting professional development education may refer certified
documentation to the ACS for assessment.

2.2.2 ACS will decide which level of qualification is appropriate and
based on this, will assess the applicant’s skills as suitable or
unsuitable for the nominated skilled occupation applied for.

I have supporting professional developement including project managment
experience, Cisco CCNA, extensive campus design experience etc. Am I
missing something else?

The case officer at ACS says I am short on experience, but will not
clarify any further.

Any suggestions you could make would be most helpfull

Best Wishes

Trev C

Hi Trev,

The basic problem in your case seems to be that you would not have had
a degree or diploma before starting work in IT and therefore you have
been penalised two years. But when you get the extra two years you'll
be home and hosed, and that sounds like it's happening in 12 months
time. The additional two years is not in the ACS guidelines, you have
to go to How to Lodge an Application in the drop down menu and then
scroll down to Work Experience for RPL where it says the following:

"Applicants who apply for RPL and do not hold a recognised academic
tertiary qualification will have deducted from their total work
experience a period of relevant IT professional experience deemed
necessary to have reached the level of qualification allocated. For
example, if an applicant is allocated a qualification level equivalent
to a 2-year diploma, they will have two years deducted from the total
of their recognized work experience (effective as of 11 April)."

We were under the impression that this might be a discretionary matter
but now it seems to be being applied inflexibly.

HTH,

Cheers

George Lombard

Trev,

I concur with George. Hubby was in the same boat ie no qualifications
and he had the 9 years experience - but only just. ACS gave hime a
deeming date od march 2002 so it does appear that they wiped the first 2
years off completely.

Keep plugging away.
