Default Back from London, many thanks to all who helped!

Just got back after an 11 hour non-stop flight. How do people do these
long (or longer) flights routinely?? We had a great time while visiting
London although our time was very limited (3 days). Other than a few
protesters outside the houses of parliament, the people of England were
some of the nicest and helpful people I've met anywhere.

One thing struck me as unusual. We stopped for a bite to eat at a
pizza/italian restaurant near Piccadilly Circus (can't recall the name).
The food was excellent and prices not that bad. However, I was
suprised to see a 1 pound per person charge for cover as well as a 2
pound per person charge for water on our bill. I did not see these
charges at any other restaurant. Is this at all typical?

Anyways, big thanks to all who gave tips, recomendations etc. for our
trip as it really made it easy for us to find our way.

Avoiding coach would help. 11 hours, are you in California?

A cover charge is not unheard-of in the UK, but is only common in touristy
areas. (In some other European countries, Italy for example, it is much
more universal.)

Mineral water is virtually always charged for even if there is a bottle
already on the table when you sit down, although you can decline it of
course. Most places will give you tap water for free if you ask, though
they might pull a face if at least some people at your table are not also
drinking charged-for beverages. London tap water, although perfectly safe,
is not very nice-tasting.

Can't afford 1st class or on British Airways their world traveler plus.
They want $200 USD (oddly 200 pounds from England) extra charge each
way, 1st class considerably higher. Once in awhile a deal comes through
consolidaters but it seems never when I want to travel!

I'm in Arizona. About 10 hours from PHX to LHR and 11 hours from LHR to
PHX.

Hell!!!!! 11 hours is a "piece of cake"
Try 23+ hours Australia to London with 1.30hr break
in the trip at Singapore or Bangkok for refuelling etc.
That would just be passed Singapore or Bangkok from Aust.

I have only ever been charged for *ordered* bottled water, not a
jug of tap water on the table, which I would expect to be free.
cover charge is more an Italian thing, perhaps they were trying
to be authentic :-)
