I'd just mention that Canberra is a small labour market and that the
reason for the change last week from all IT occupations to 2231-79 was
the view, external to the ACT government, that it should only be
accepting MODL occupations. For that reason I think it's too early for
everyone on the planet to be seeking 2231-79 assessments, particularly
as the ACT imposes a fee and insists on evidence of labour market
research and lifestyle research and financial capacity. Bearing in mind
that the population is three quarters the size of Tasmania. That it's
the national capital sounds attractive, but you need to be realistic.
The major employment pools in IT are in Sydney and Melbourne.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Agreed, but having had applications for Nominations accepted in the ACT
the Territory seems quite relaxed about the evidencing of research into
living and working there.

This said the clients in question prepared fairly persuasive statements.

Also, for IT applicants generally the ACT seems to be the only
reasonably viable pathway to a permanent residency visa if they don't
have the necessary points for a 136. So I'd not knock it as an option
too much, George ... if it means people can move to Australia and it
fills a niche in the market who's complaining?

Best regards.

Hi Alan,

Well each to his own, but I'd be running a prospective candidate's CV
past Julie well before running off a costs agreement or sending them off
for a skills assessment. As you know, there's a massive group of older
IT people who'll try anything and I'm not one to raise hopes
unnecessarily. For example, anyone thinking of STNI to the ACT would
need to have some experience of or understanding of advanced nation
government IT environments, since Canberra is pretty much still a
company town. Also they had 30 IT applications in the week before IT
was removed from the program, and that rate isn't sustainable.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Noted.

Though that's not my experience with the IT people for whom we have
obtained an ACT State Nomination.

Best regards.

Hi Alan,

Yes, we were also fortunate to have people approved before the window
closed last week, and I agree that it wasn't a highly selective program.
Further, I'm sure that the ACT is happy with the mix it's got to date,
but as with IT STNI in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria etc, it's
bound to get more competitive, and the considerations I've raised are
the obvious ones, quite apart from particular technologies - for
example, I can't see much of a role for SAP in the ACT unless there are
government modules being used there.

Cheers,

George Lombard
