Default Australia and NZ Perminant Residency Question

I have searched through the threads and found some information on this
but i would like to clarify some bits if anybody knows.

I am looking at emigrating to Australia but i would like to spend
some time working in Newzealand as i have a very good friend that can
get me work.

I was under the impression that i could apply for residnecy in
Australia, activate it by going to Australia for a period then go and
work in NZ with my Australia visa. From the searches on here it seems as
though i can do this but time in NZ doesn't count towards
application....is this correct.

If it is what would the best way to go. Work visa for NZ for a couple of
years then apply for residency in Aus. Would apprecitate your views.

Thanks, Neil

The only safe way to do this is to become an Australian citizen first.

Australian PRs do have rights in New Zealand (although it's a grey area
if you only have an initial migrant visa and not an RRV).

However the big problem is that time in NZ does not count for Australian
Resident Return Visa or citizenship purposes. So people who 'hop'
between Australia and NZ (without citizenship) can be left without
status in either country: result is a one-way trip home.

http://www.immigration.govt.nz has information on NZ issues.
Also remember that laws in both Australia and NZ are always
subject to change.

It probably hasn't sunk in that Australia and NZ are different countries!!
NOT in the sense that Wales and England are different - but in the way
France and Germany are different!!!!

Really! Heres me thinking you just drove over the bridge and you were
there. Well thanks for clearing that up.
