A friend of mine is looking for a nice but reasonable 3/4 star hotel
in Rome near the Vatican (which I realize there aren't many). The
Atlante Star/Garden Hotels looked like they fit the bit, but I am now
reading very contradictory reviews on TripAdvisor - ranging from good
to horrendous. Does anyone have any input or any additional
suggestions for that area? TIA!

I have only stayed once near the Vatican and it was at the Olympic Hotel,
aka Grand Olympic Hotel and I was pretty satisfied with the accomodations.
It is no more than 5 blocks from Vatican Square and is very close to Metro
and Bus stations. It's probably a 15 - 20 minute walk to Piazza Navona
passing by the Castel Santangelo. The amenities were good though the rooms
are on the smallish side.
