Default Applying for a working holiday visa while waiting for 457 visa to be processed

I read some threads recently on applying for temporary visas while
waiting for a PR application to be processed, and the general advice
seemed to be to be wary because if the PR came through first, the
temporary visa would over ride it if it was granted afterwards.

In my
situation, my partner has been offered a job in Sydney and is applying
for a 457 visa. However, the company that is sponsoring him have taken
forever to make the job offer and request forms such as the 1066 from
him (they are organising all the paperwork in Australia for us).

Despite this, they are pressurising him to start ASAP. He has a start
date of about two months time, but I get the impression that they think
(like me) that this might be cutting it a bit fine - especially if they
have not yet sent the 1066 off!

They have suggested that he goes out
now on a temporary working holiday visa, while waiting for the 457 to be
processed. I would not be able to join him, as I have already been out
on a WH visa.

My question is how long would the working holiday visa
take to process (it's over 10 years since I applied for mine)? Would he
have to go overseas to validate his 457 visa? Is this worth looking
into? Or is it too risky ie if the 457 visa was processed before the WH
visa?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi there
Spookily enough I'd just emailed you! Can't answer most of
your questions but if he does go for a working holiday visa I would
suggest applying online...I did this, it took 10 mins to complete & it
was approved in under 1 hour!!! ...I also saved 22 quid on what the
travel agent would have charged to do it for me...
As a rule WHV can
take up to 4 weeks to process but I think this is mainly if you need a
medical (working in hospitals & schools etc)
Hope someone can help you
with your other queries! Good luck
Lx

Hi Chels,

With the move to processing all 457s in Australia we're finding that the
processing time is a matter of weeks, not months. The whole e-lodgment
procedure, while cumbersome at the beginning, is fluid at the end. If your
employer is using an agent, they should have a good idea of the procedure.
If not, you should be e-lodging your own visa application and doing your
medicals using forms 160EH. Bear in mind that paper-based applications are
now much slower.

Naturally your partner could apply for a WHV and then lodge the 457
application onshore, without difficulty. But doing the 457 application
itself would be a practical option.

Cheers

Thank you both for that information, which I have passed on to my
partner for him to decide what he wants to do!
