Apology ordered for Muslim's TV comment
Mullah said 'sick' and 'not natural' homosexuals deserve death

March 13, 2004

A television channel in New Zealand that aired a Muslim's condemnation of
homosexuality has been ordered to broadcast an apology and full retraction.

The country's Broadcasting Standards Authority called the comments by
Brother Abdullah Hakim Quick on Triangle Television's "Voice of Islam" show
"hate speech," reported the New Zealand Press Association.

On the program last September, the Muslim lecturer said AIDS was caused by
homosexual practices and that homosexuals were dropping dead from the
disease and wanted "to take us all down with them." He also said homosexuals
were "sick" and "not natural."

The Islamic position on homosexuality, Quick declared, is death.

"Muslims are going to have to take a stand [against homosexuals]," he said,
"and it's not enough to call names."

Triangle Television, a non-profit public broadcaster in Auckland, originally
contested the complaint, brought by Doug Clayton, insisting broadcasting
standards were not breached. But Triangle's chief executive, Jim Blackman,
accepted the ruling March 6, the New Zealand news service said.

"We originally felt that the speaker was entitled to have his say, but we
now fully accept the Broadcasting Standards Authority ruling," said
Blackman.

Clayton said the comments were "a hateful and bitter diatribe against
homosexuals."

Triangle defended the program as a religious address by a mullah concerning
issues raised by the Quran, according to the Press Association. While some
comments could be viewed as "rather extreme," there is "reason to believe"
they were the genuinely held beliefs of Muslims, the TV company said.

However, one Muslim leader supported the complaint, Ashraf Anwar, an
executive member of New Zealand's Council of Christians and Muslims.

Anwar said Islam, as does Christianity and Judaism, condemns homosexuality,
"but no one person has the right to dictate and particularly in the name of
Islam."

New Zealand has an estimated 30,000 Muslims.

[You mean Islams don't like homosexuals either?....here I was thinking they were full of love, tolerance and compassion.....]
