Default Apartments in Ajman?

Hi I'm planning on moving to the UAE and am interested in living in one of the least costly emirates. My research has told me Ajman is inexpensive yet interesting enough, I think, for me. I can find almost no information on apartments in Ajman other than that the price appears that it would be under $1,000 USD per month for a decent one bedroom.

My primary question is how do I go about renting? Must I use an agent? Or can I begin hunting on my own once I arrive?

Is under $1,000 USD realistic for a one bedroom? (When I said "decent" above I meant not run down, safe, and with amenities such as a gym.)

Also, if anyone has any websites you can direct me to for apartments or agents, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.
