Considering some of the messages about delays posted on this
group, you wouldn't be an "optimist" would you, Mark? :-)

Perhaps members of this group could offer a prize, or at least
effusive congratulations for the shortest time from original
application to the granting of a resident visa?

Alternatively, the longest time and still eventually successful?

Perhaps those who only had trouble with their application being
lost or mislaid, or whatever.

... Perhaps their experiences could be useful to other
applicants?

Even some sort of "recognition" for those who were denied
a residence visa. A guide as to "how not to do it".

I personally know of one case of an applicant being not only
denied a migrant visa, but told that he need not bother to
re-apply in his lifetime.

His "offense"? On encountering the question, he didn't mention
an arrest and conviction of driving while drunk!

In the USA, all such offenses are a matter of public record,
and not only can Australian migration officials check them but
anyone can.

The sad part about it is the offense probably wouldn't have
been grounds for rejection in Australia.

All of us have probably made mistakes in our life that we would
rather not discuss, but contributors to such a "contest" could
always post under a pseudonym if they wished, relying on some
individual "contest judge", or panel of same, to be discreet.

On the other hand, of course, a few decades ago, I remember news
stories about adult Australians even being denied a tourist visa
to the U.S. on the grounds that they had been honest about their
"arrest record" as a teenager using "Pot" [Cannabis] decades ago.

In some Aussie states, this would be regarded as about as
serious as "jaywalking". Apparently the USA took a more serious
view.

However, this was some time ago. Today, I find it a bit hard to
imagine that either the US or Australian officials would take
such an offense all that seriously.

I don't really know, though. It probably would depend a lot on
the individual they were dealing with.

On the balance, though, I would think that there would be more
"tolerance". Certainly on "tourist" visas, probably on
"immigration" visas.

On an application for a tourist visa, it might not matter all
that much.

Put it this way, were I such an official, and had never have
been, I wouldn't worry much about tourist visas.

Personally, I value honesty very highly. Were I evaluating
tourist applications, would be pretty easy on approvals.

However, if I was considering an applicant for a migrant visa,
I would probably be a lot tougher.

There are a lot of criminals in both the US and Australia, and
neither society needs any more of them.

Personally, if I thought that an applicant for a migrant visa was
lying to me in any way, I would either reject them or pass the
problem to my supervisor.

Simply on the basis that I don't expect anyone to lie to me, even
in everyday life.

Unrealistically high standards? Perhaps, but some people have
these. Simply on the basis that if they are willing to lie to me
on an unimportant matter, then they may lie on a more important,
and harder to discern, matter.

I would maintain that the standard of honesty in the general
population is decreasing worldwide.

As a somewhat trivial example, perhaps, when I was a university
student in the USA, we only needed a university student card to
check out a book from the university library. Would have been
pretty easy to forge one, or someone might find a lost card, or
even hadn't brought his card, although he was a student.

In this case, a simple signature would suffice.

Today, though, things are different. Even university students
feel free to steal books from university libraries, so even
university libraries have to invest in much higher security
precautions.

Anyway, am sure that you and some other readers can see what am
getting at here. Naturally, I welcome any comments.

Australia, and many other countries, need migrants with a wide
range of skills. Yet if I worked for the relevant department, I
would have to strike a balance between the people we need and the
criminals we don't need.

If I veered too far either way, I might endanger my job.

Am retired, not working regularly at any job. Have worked for
the Australian Gov't but not in immigration or police.

However, would appreciate your views, or views from anyone on the
group, actually.

Cheers,
Kangaroo16
