Default any madrid experts please?

hello,

i am thinking of going to madrid in a couple of months for a few days. i
have a few questions if thats ok:

1. which hotel is better in terms of comfort and cleanliness, location
(safety); hotel amaco or gran via hotel. do you think it worth an extra 30
US dollars per night in hotel gran via?

2. do the local people speak a lot of english?

3. how safe is it for someone travelling alone in spain, especially at night
when going to the bars/clubs, etc.

4. any other travel tips for madrid would be appreciated.

thanks.!

Following up to traveller

    >2. do the local people speak a lot of english?

not a lot.

    >3. how safe is it for someone travelling alone in spain, especially at night

Pretty safe, but there are bag snatchers and pick pockets and
Madrid is the worst in Spain for crime so take usual precautions.
The old quarter is great for an long tapas crawl!

My mother goes often to hotel Anaco when she goes on business to
Madrid. The street where it is located (tres cruces) looks a bit seedy
but it is not dangerous. It's totally OK and safe.
    >2. do the local people speak a lot of english?

No, not at all. You'll have moe luck with young people, they might
understand you but never less they won't speak very fluently,
generally speaking of course.

There are many very helpful people on the message board at www.madridman.com
. The archives are easily searched for posts on the topics you mention.
The site also has a great deal of practical information that was very
helpful to me when planning our trip to Spain.

proper night's sleep, do u know if thats true? also, from the website it

Ok, I guess I ask because there are some nice hotels I can think of that are in
better locations than those two. I know both locations, but am not familiar
with either hotel. If you are interested in a solid hotel in a better
local...let us know budget. My list is primarily one or two star
hotels.....and then hostals. Just a thought.
