Default Advice wanted on Italian Lakes hotels

We're planning to visit the Italian Lake District next spring/summer.

There are some very, very ritzy sounding and pricey hotels mentioned
in guidebooks and various on-line sites. Grand Hotel Serbelloni in
Bellagio, Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Villa Feltrinelli in Gargagno.
Any comments? Are these really wonderful experiences or monumental
ripoffs?

Our tastes in furnishings go toward clean and modern and we really
like rooms with great views, particularly where you can lie in bed and
see the view. Old fashioned and stuffy isn't up our alley. Really
good food matters, which is probably most important for breakfast in
a hotel since you can usually get your other meals outside.

Any opinions, recommendations and "ones to avoid" warnings much
appreciated.

Cheers,

Max
