Default Accountants, please help!

Hi all,

Is it necessary to be a full member (ie with three years of work
experience) of the accounting body to qualify for positive skills
assessment? I quote NIA's FAQ site: "If you are a member (by
examination) of a professional body without an asterisk [mine's ACCA],
it is likely that your professional qualification is considered
comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree."

Does this mean that it's only necessary to complete all the exams? The
local NIA person in charge didn't seem to understand my query and the
two e-mails I've sent have yet to receive a reply. Thanks so much!

Janice

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking either. But if it is whether
passing the ACCA exams without having yet joined the ACCA (because you
don't yet have enough practical experience) is sufficient to qualify for
a positive NIA skills assessment, no I don't think it is.

I think the key phrase in the FAQ you quote is 'if you are a member' and
it sounds as if you are not yet a member.

Hi louie,

Thanks but I think it should be okay. I went through the whole issue
again and paraphrasing Form 1121i, ACCA/CIMA members who are
Associates/ Fellows [ie. not fully qualified members, like myself],
without a tertiary degree, are advised to apply to NIA/ ICAA.

Any other opinions on this? I'm all ears...

Associate/Fellow members of CIMA and ACCA *are* "fully qualified". Does
that apply to you or not?

Oh dear. Does this mean that I need three years of work experience
(which is necessary to become a "full member")? I finished my exams in
June 2006 and have achieved Affiliate status. When NIA says "member",
do they mean Member (ie Chartered Certified Accountant) or member (as
in part of the organization)? The FAQ site uses "member (by
examination)".

It is not necessary to be a full member of an accounting body to qualify
for positive skills assessment. As long as you have a degree and you
have met 9 out of 12 core studies requirement to obtain that degree.

I think it means that if you're a member of a professional body without
an asterisk, most likely your qualification is comparable to an
Australian Bachelor Degree because you probably have to meet 9 out of 12
core studies requirement needed for positive asessment to pass the
examination for that professional qualification.

Thats what I think anyway

Thanks for the advice, all! I have closure! I finally called NIA again
today and got hold of the officer in charge. Has a brief but detailed
discussion with her, summarised into the points below:

a) You CAN apply as long as you've completed ALL your professional
exams
b) No syllabus details needed for ACCA
c) Get a letter from ACCA stating that you've finished all your exams
and will be eligible for full membership upon completing three years of
work experience
d) Give all details of any recognised prior learning (RPL) - syllabus,
results, status (if applicable) etc - which entitled you for any
exemptions to ACCA (I did CAT)

I'm over the moon!
