Default 1yr extension removal of conditions; no passport

Reply-To:

Hello,

I am currently awaiting removal of conditions at VSC. The original one year
extension letter is about to expire at the end of January. So I will need to
get another 1yr extension at my local INS office. However my passport has
expired and obtaining a new one will take a minimum of 6 weeks, which will
put me about two weeks past the expiry of the letter at best. I understand
the extension is given as a stamp in your passport?
What is the best course of action at this point? Can the stamp go in the old
passport? Is there a letter you can get instead of the stamp? Or any other
ideas.

They can only stamp a current valid passport!
You should apply for your extention so that your status does not expire and
have the new pass port stamped when it comes in.

You don't really need the stamp unless you are planning to travel. Your
privileges as a resident are still valid without material proof. Either
you can hold off until you get the new passport or have the USCIS
district office place the I-551 on either an I-94 or on USCIS
letterhead.

The best course of action would be to get another passport.
After you get the passport, then get a stamp.
