It can be quite cynical. By making you wait until after midnight they
collect another day's charges. My mother was not allowed to die until after
midnight (i.e., they wouldn't declare her dead until then) so they collected
another day's fees.

It didn't seem to embarrass them that her grandson, a brain surgeon, was
sitting by her and was quite aware she had died. He was not on staff at that
hospital and was not authorised to make the decision, least of all on a
relative.
