Default [Q:] Qualification and work experience

I am qualified as a civil engineering technician and worked for a couple of
years in the engineering/building. About five years ago I changed careers
and moved into IT. Although I have attained a few industry certifications in
IT I do not have any formal university/college qualifications. I intend to
work in IT in Canada. My question is: can I claim points under Factor 1:
Education for my civil engineering diploma and under Factor 3: Experience
for my IT industry experience, or do they both need to be within the same
industry? If I cannot claim the points as above, how far back may I go to
claim experience in a given field, i.e. may I go back five years and more to
claim experience in civil engineering although my career is now in IT?

Thanks in advance

Education and experience are 2 separate factors and current law doesn't
require applicant to have work experience in the same field as education.
You should claim all your skilled work experience within past 10 years
anyway.

Be aware that there are very few IT jobs around right now. New migrants
suffer the most.

This is my understanding after reading through the information
brochure. Can someone verify this? This looks suspiciously different
from what was required 2-3 years ago.

1. As long as I have "skilled work experience" in an occupation listed
in the NOC I can count all of it?

2. I changed my occupation from IT to finance after completing by
B-School, which shouldnt make a difference, because I have more than 4
years paid full-time employment?

3. Moreover, as per current law, there is no such thing as 'intended
occupation'??

Question:
If I have trouble getting a reference letter from an employer, but I
can fully document my employment with offer letters, contracts,
promotion and other official correspondence, how does that affect my
chances? How can I remedy the situation?

When the applicant claims all skilled work experience within past 10
years anyway, there may be multi NOC/occupations there.

1) How does the officer determine which one is the right one for the
applicant's intended occupation?

2) How does the officer determine the years of experience for awarding
the correct points, which include the multi different
experience/employment?

Can you explain them?

1) What "intended occupation"? There is no such thing anymore.

2) By counting years of conclusively documented and acceptable work
experience in all claimed occupations.

1. Yes, but only if it is listed in top 3 bands of NOC - get the full NOC
matrix here:

http://www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/generic/matrix.pdf

2. All work experience in one or more skilled occupations (those listed in
top 3 bands of NOC) in past 10 years will count.

3. Correct

What you listed may only prove the fact of employment, nothing more. You
still need to show evidence of duties performed.

Apparently, the question has not been answered directly.

The "intended occupation" means the one that the officer will take
into account the years of experience and award the corresponding
points. Still not clear? Here is an example for you.

So-and-so worked as a civil engineer for 2 years and a computer
programmer for another two years. So he listed two NOC codes in the
application form. How many points can he get in the work experience
sector and why?

Can you answer the question directly and try to give the points. Thank
you.

It doesn't matter what and how many occupations - all what matters is number
of years of full time (or full time equivalent) work and that claimed
occupations are among those listed in top 3 bands of NOC.

There is nothing about "intended occupation" in current law. "Word
"intended" refers to the future while points are awarded for experience,
which is the past.

Still not clear?

If you cannot figure out what 2 years plus 2 years of skilled work
experience then all your time in this forum so far is a total waste.

So, the applicant having worked as a Legal Secretary for three years
and Computer Programmer for one year with a BS degree in Biology (15+
years of full-time study) can get 21 points in the Work Experience
Factor and 22 points in the Education Factor.

It is based on your answers above. You won't disagree with this
statement, will you?
